We enjoyed a meal for our wedding anniversary on 19 December 2009. Food was excellent and plenty of it! Service was top class and the restaurant is a really lovely place to eat. Lesley even produced a lovely chocolate cake for us with a candle on - had to take it home as we were just too full! Thanks Lesley and Paul.

NORTHAMPTON CHRONICLE AND ECHO

BOOKING dinner for a landmark family celebration would normally send me heading off to an old favourite where I could be certain we'd all be in safe hands, but on this occasion yours truly went off-piste and booked in at The Griffin, a place none of us had ever visited before. Luckily, we couldn't have asked for more from a night out at Pitsford's excellent, if slightly unassuming (from the outside) hostelry. In fairness, we'd heard just good reports and the fact that we could only get a table for 8.15pm on Saturday was proof enough that plenty of other people did know about the food.

The pub's been there since the 1600s and is a freehouse, which means it stocks a good mix of beers, including IPA, Everards and Potbelly from the county-based micro-brewery We sat in the extremely cosy lounge area where there's load's to look at on the walls while you chat and ponder over the menu before our friendly waitress took the orders.

The dining room area is set at the back and is really well done out. There's a great ambience and although the ceilings are low and the tables were packed you weren't drowned out by noise. Birthday boy Dave and mother-in-law Gret both went for the warm chicken liver and red onion salad, which was beautifully presented and served with a pine nut dressing. They like their chicken livers and both were pleased by both the flavours on the plate. Wife Kate and I also doubled up, going for parma ham, pear and walnut salad. This was excellent too, with nicely dressed leaves peppered with the sweetness of the pear and the wonderfully salty taste of the ham, itself one of the great joys of life.

Other starters included gravadlax, a summer vegetable terrine and field mushrooms topped with goats cheese. For mains, Dave moved on to pork belly served, intriguingly, on a bed of oriental stir fry. He really enjoyed the pork belly - a great cut of the pig and sensational when cooked well - but he was less convinced by the stir fry Gret. who rarely clears her plate even when she's eating a sandwich, managed to do so on this occasion. She had opted for roasted chump of lamb served with a bacon parmen-tier potato and rounded off with a jus of apricots and sherry. It looked great and tasted great. Kate and I each chose a lOoz prime ribeye. served with chips, mushrooms, onion rings and tomatoes. Mine was a sensational steak, cooked to medium rare perfection and oozing flavour. Kate felt the same and we were both surprised they were only lOoz, because they seemed more.

The wines were quite reasonably priced and we eventually worked our way through two bottles of Argentinian Merlot. Puddings included key lime pie, chocolate and orange cheesecake and peach melba in a brandy snap basket, but none of us had room left to indulge. What we all liked about the menu was its simplicity. It's not about having pages of offerings, it's about keeping the choices to a manageable number and doing them well.

For starters, mains and desserts. The Griffin's menu did this and delivered. It was also seasonal - a summer vegetable risotto for mains, for example. The pub also has disabled access and although there is no disabled toilet, staff reported that customers were able to access the toilets as they were wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. The service was friendly and efficient and the overall ambience of the pub was delightful. By the time we'd paid the bill (£124) and headed off. we'd all enjoyed an excellent meal in a hidden gem of a pub. You can't ask for more than that when you turn 60, can you?
